What is Inkwell?

Inkwell is a markdown editor that gets out of your way.

It's 12 megabytes and it starts in under a second. It doesn't need the internet, doesn't need an account, and doesn't send your words anywhere. You download it, you run it, you write.

Why Inkwell exists

Most writing tools today are either too much or too little. VS Code is a full IDE. Notepad has no preview. Obsidian is config hell but not in a good way. Typora costs money but hasn't shipped an update in a while.

Inkwell sits in the gap: a clean, fast, beautiful editor for people who write in markdown and want nothing else.

The stack

Inkwell is built with Tauri v2 — a Rust backend with a lightweight webview frontend. The entire frontend is a single HTML file with vanilla JavaScript. No React, no bundler, no build step.

This isn't a limitation. It's a choice. Zero dependencies means zero supply chain risk, instant iteration, and a binary small enough to fit on a floppy disk (if anyone still had one).

Part of 4Worlds

Inkwell is the first app from 4Worlds, an independent software studio building tools that respect the people who use them.

  • Inkwell — write
  • Lore — know
  • Fate — see & control
  • Parley — speak

Four tools. Four verbs. No cloud, no subscriptions, no data leaving your machine.
